Nevada Senator Harry Reid today announced he has appointed Las Vegas City Councilman Ricki Barlow and Cherie Jamason, the Director of the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, to the National Commission on Hunger. The ten member National Commission on Hunger was established in the omnibus Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2014 to develop a report that focuses on new strategies to solve the problem of domestic hunger. The Commission will examine ways to partner with the faith, nonprofit, and business sectors in order to help solve this national problem.
“I am so pleased to appoint Ricki and Cherie to this important commission and I know they will represent Nevada well,” said Senator Reid. “Anyone can experience hunger, as we have learned during recent tough economic times. But we know hunger disproportionally affects children and seniors. This is a problem we can solve through community partnerships and I am confident the findings of this commission will bring us closer to a solution. “I thank Senator Reid for trusting me with this role,” said Ricki Barlow.
“Too many boys and girls in Las Vegas and other big cities across the country go to bed hungry, every night. As Las Vegas City Councilman, I witness each day the many challenges we face as a community. Therefore, I look forward to serving on this very important commission on hunger, working aggressively to eradicate this problem once and for all.”
